Towards Decongesting Train Systems through Simulation

Researcher: John Sixto Santos

Abstract

The train systems of Metro Manila is one of the most heavily used public train system in the world. In the City of Manila alone, it services over a million citizens, hence very few ask the question: “Why is the LRT/MRT congested?” since it makes sense that it would be congested. However, looking at other train systems in the world, we find that there are many examples that serve an even larger audience minus the congestion. Knowing these facts, it turns out that it is sound to ask the question stated above and find an answer to it. What makes the New York Subway system different from the LRT system? Is it possible to adapt our system to make it function like it? Is it even possible or are there just too many people using the Philippine train system? Is there no way to stem the millions of Pesos lost to traffic? To answer these questions, one thing is clear: it must be simulated.
